"Where do I seek satisfaction?"

Hello blogging friends! Blogging and college-ing at the same time is really hard! I just had my busiest week of the semester so far and it feels REALLY good to have a weekend to relax. Tonight I got to see one of my sister missionaries who went home in December! She came back to visit cuz one of her investigators is getting baptized tomorrow :) It's super exciting - the third convert baptism we've had since mine in November. Wow :)

Anywho, so my post tonight is about where we find our satisfaction in life.
I'm part of this group called Navigators (Navs for short), which is basically a non-denominational Bible study/worship group. Every Thursday night, we all meet in a lecture hall and a student band plays Christian rock and sometimes some hymns and they project the lyrics up on the screen and we all sing along and it's an amazing experience. They also have a speaker come and basically give a talk like members of the church give talks, but this is a non-denominational worship group we're talking about, so it's not quite the same.

This past Thursday, the topic was satisfaction, and how "True satisfaction is found in Jesus alone." It was a really cool talk. I'm just gonna type out my notes for you guys, and maybe add some of my own ideas in there too. (Disclaimer - almost none of the thoughts in this post are mine. I borrowed them. Credit goes to our Navs speaker on 2-12-15, whose name I forget)

The speaker focused on Isaiah 55:1-3
1 Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
2 Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.
3 Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.
He had a super cool point to go with each verse.

v1 is "an invitation to satisfaction." So often, we have a "work for it" mentality, relying on our own hard work to get us where we want to go in life. Heavenly Father invites us to come find enjoyment in Him without price. He loves us. Relax for a minute in the comfort that brings. Those that are thirsty can find relief in Him, and those that have nothing can "buy without price." As a stressed-out, poor college student, this is so comforting to me.

Sorry I don't have an image source - it was saved on my phone
v2 discusses the "reality of where we seek satisfaction." Heavenly Father asks us why we devote ourselves to things that don't fill us up. Ask yourself - "Where do I seek satisfaction? I will be satisfied when ________."

v3 is the "promise of satisfaction." "Come unto me," says the Lord. John 7:37 says "If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink." John 4 talks about the woman at the well. I had never thought about it this way before, but in v18, the woman is finding satisfaction in men, not in the Lord. Go read it, I got the shivers when I thought about it in that context.

The speaker went on to talk about what it looks like to find satisfaction in Christ. He had three points again:
-COME unto Christ, constantly
-Realize (where you've been looking for satisfaction) & Repent
-Enjoy Jesus. Sometimes we make it too complicated.

I need to work on these things. I often get super distracted by life, and I don't make enough time for Heavenly Father. Guess what? Lent starts this coming Wednesday. I don't have to go all Catholic on it, but the idea of a New-Year's-Resolution-type thing is appealing. Like choosing a church-related thing that I need to work on, and working on it with the goal of having improved by Easter. I'm awful at remembering to pray, so that's my goal. And if I put it in writing, maybe I'll stick to it :) Anyone else setting a goal?

  1. I love your thoughts on this scripture. I'm going to be doing some pondering on where I find satisfaction...I think some resolutions are in order for me, too. Thanks for sharing!

    Hugs!
